Why should I participate in the I-Corps Program @UMass Chan?

The I-Corps Program @UMass Chan Medical School, is designed to support the commercialization of biomedical research by providing training in state-of-the-art methods and strategic guidance to faculty, staff and students during the early phases of technology development.

Based on the National Science Foundation’s Innovation Corps (I-Corps™) Program, the premiere federally-funded innovation and commercialization training in the U.S., our short course is an evidence-based experience that will take you out of your comfort zone to connect with potential customers.

Designed specifically for the biomedical researcher at UMass Chan, it guides interdisciplinary teams through a hands-on process of understanding the market for their technology utilizing a proven customer discovery methodology.

Figure 1. New ventures launched from 2017-2024 UMass Chan Medical School Regional I-Corps Program Cohorts. No cohort took place in 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic. Of 46 teams, 13 startup companies were launched amongst 2017-2024 cohorts (28.3% of teams successfully spun out ventures). Of the 13 startup teams, 5 companies acquired at least one SBIR or STTR award to fund the startup (38.5% of startups launched received public funding).

Figure 2. Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Scientific Technology Transfer (STTR) awards issued to 5 companies from 2017-2024 UMass Chan Regional Cohorts. Phase I awards are smaller funds that are granted for shorter time periods. Phase II awards often support R&D funded by previous Phase I awards via larger grants with longer project timelines.
